How do we make things more sustainable?

Conscious choices

Among all the wonderful products available for the hospitality industry, there's a huge variety when it comes to sustainability. By making conscious choices, we try to contribute to making our beautiful island more sustainable. Conscious choices that mean we avoid, as much as possible, products that are highly environmentally intensive or polluting. That's why we try to order our products as locally and closely as possible. For example, we serve as many wines from Europe as we can, which saves a lot of transport.

Local is better

We try to keep our suppliers on the island as much as possible. That's why we work together with:

  • Kaasboerderij Wezenspyk — genuine Texel farmer's and sheep's cheese
  • Texelse pasta and flour made from grains grown on Texel
  • Slagerij Goënga — they supply us with Texel lamb
  • Hennenhof for our fresh eggs
  • Texelse kroketten for our homemade croquettes and bitterballen (texelsekroketten.nl)
  • Slagerij Alewijn Ott — lovely meat, sourced from the island wherever possible
  • Tesselaar Familiebrouwerij — beer brewed on Texel
  • Texelse Visspecialist for fresh fish
  • Zuivel boerderij Texel for fresh milk
  • Novalishoeve for the yoghurt
  • Bakkerij Dunselman from Den Helder for our fresh bread

SOOF

We sell lemonades from SOOF. These contain only fruit, vegetables and herbs, on a natural basis and so without any nasties. We finish these syrups ourselves with still or sparkling water (from our KRNWTR+ tap).

Solar panels

On the roof of our pavilion lie 81 solar panels. We've replaced a large part of our old appliances with new ones, and these new appliances run on electricity instead of gas. This way, we're fairly self-sufficient.

KRNWTR+

Our bar is fitted with a KRNWTR+ tap. This allows us to serve purified, chilled tap water straight from the source. Dutch tap water is more than good enough to drink, so why bother with transporting and using bottles? Our tap saves an enormous amount of transport, and it also means we skip the external cleaning and refilling of bottles altogether.

Circular

We've recently started an intensive partnership with a local farm. A local dairy farm where they pasteurise their own fresh milk and turn it into a range of lovely dairy products. We use their fresh milk for our coffees, as well as for the pancakes and other milk-based dishes. No more long-life milk for us. This way, we work with a better product while also cutting down on a lot of unnecessary transport.

On top of that, a good part of our meat also comes from this farm. They work with dual-purpose cows, which are turned into our burgers and several other tasty dishes, without the meat ever having to leave the island. Our homemade bitterballen and croquettes are made with this meat too.

Plastic soup

When choosing between all the different products, we always try to avoid plastic wherever we can. That's why we use reusable tea strainers, aluminium milk cups, straws made from sawdust waste, and our biscuits aren't individually wrapped. Any plastic waste we do still have gets sorted separately so it can be recycled.
